Overview

Launching in 2020, the Food Network's recipe companion app was at its peak, boasting a 4.9 rating in the app store and two million daily active users.

This app assisted customers with planning, shopping, and cooking alongside their favorite chefs. However, following the 2022 merger between Warner Brothers and Discovery, the new entity streamlined its streaming strategies, resulting in the discontinuation of the app in 2024.

Grocery Shopping

Utility and productivity were key factors driving customer subscriptions. The option to grocery shop provided a unique opportunity to support customers in purchasing ingredients after selecting a recipe. To enhance this service, we partnered with Wisk, enabling customers to order their groceries directly through the platform.

Meal Planning

Implementing meal planning proved to be a complex challenge. User research revealed diverse planning preferences among our customers: while some sought curated meal plans, others preferred tools to create their own. In response, we developed a layered experience that accommodated both needs. This feature became highly successful, attracting weekly engagement from 20% of our premium customers.

Live and On Demand cooking classes were a major selling point, especially with our partnership with Amazon. Our Echo Show app allowed customers to participate in the classes hands-free while in their kitchens.

Our partnership with Amazon provided customers who owned FireTV or Echo Show devices with one year of premium access at no cost. Throughout this promotion, the majority of our customer base was acquired through the Amazon ecosystem, underscoring the significant impact of these cross-platform experiences.

Initial Journey Mapping

We created a solution where a customer’s Amazon login would seamlessly resolve to a new or existing Food Network Kitchen account. This was especially important on Echo Show devices where input is limited. In our staging environment, we expected the majority of customers to sign up in two steps.

What Went Wrong

After launch, we learned that Amazon had additional undocumented steps that would sometimes, but not always, appear to the flow that we hadn’t accounted for. These screens did not appear in our staging environment and even surprised our partners at Amazon.

How We Fixed It

We revisited the flow make the customer feel like they were always moving forward, and that every step had a purpose. Our screens became a simple background for Amazon’s where we gave cues to the customer of where they were in the process. 

This small change resulted in a massive +10% (additive) increase in conversion.
